Opportunities to Serve

Sunday services provide congregation members with the opportunity to serve as acolytes, ushers, communion assistants, assisting ministers and lectors. Each of these are important jobs to make the liturgy go as smoothly and coordinated as possible.

Acolytes:

A job reserved for congregation members age 10-18 who have graduated from or are participating in First Communion or Confirmation studies at St. John’s. An acolyte lights the candles on the altar and helps out with assisting the Pastor by holding books and being a part of the processional and recessional. Acolyte scheduling and training is coordinated by Acolyte Coordinator Mrs. Judy Lohmeyer.

Ushers:

An usher helps collect the offering and assists with handing out bulletins before the service.

Communion Assistants:

These are comprised of elders of the congregation and other willing men of the congregation.

Assisting Ministers:

The assisting minister helps with prayers and serving communion.

Lectors:

These people are responsible for reading two Bible readings towards the beginning of the service.
